An *(acronym) for the *(user interface) concept of "What you see is what you mean." as contrasted with _(WYSIWYG). The basic premise is that objects which are abstracted from representational details are presented and controlled on the screen in some vocabulary relevant to the _(semantics) that the user is interested in.

This term was basically coined for the _(Lyx software documentation| http://www.lyx.org) to explain the difference between it and other visually-oriented word processors.
