Kernel

The term for any "central" part in a software program.

Particularly, a statically linked centralized run-time dispatcher (particularly in an "operating system"). As any centralized bloat, it turns out to be easier to design, but completely inefficient to use.

Also see Centralization in general, and pushing the idea of a kernel to its limit with a Microkernel. Oppose to design with no-kernel.
